From the Youth

Everybody Knows It

Our first song produced by Nkhani Zanga and created by Fresh Enough Productions, is entirely written and directed by girls at Vision of Hope, a shelter for vulnerable girls in Lusaka, Zambia.

The chorus of this song was written by Joyce, after growing up in an orphanage her whole life, one day she realized that the house mothers were not her real mothers, and wrote these lyrics to try to understand what love is since she sees it all around her but never felt she understood it. By expressing herself through music and singing to her sisters in the center, she was able to release her painful emotions and heal. Once we discovered this chorus, several other girls at the center also wrote verses for their interpretations of love.

Lyrics are in English, Chi’Nyanja, French and Swahili, as some of the girls residing at the center are Congolese refugees.

Lyrics Translation:

Joyce:

Chorus
Everybody knows it, everybody does it, everybody sees it, I just don’t know it’s love Everybody knows it, everybody does it, everybody sees it, I just don’t know it’s love Love love love, la la la love love love love, la la la love love love I just don’t know it’s love Love love love, la la la love love love love, la la la love love love

Martine (Swahili)
God who is in heaven
We ask for your love God blessed us on this earth because of his love You, God

Liz (Nyanja)
I am talking about love Let’s love each other
Young ones and old ones
Because love is very important
Without love, there is nothing you can do
You say love is a strong feeling that we have,
Let’s show love to one another
This is Liz in the house, Vision of Hope, peace, I’m out

Jenny (French)
Love is a session, not three people, only two people
The volume of friendship that is clear all around the sun
The line of stars It’s me, Jenny, thank you

Marie (French)
Come towards us girls on the dance floor,
Love is good to all people
If we love you, we also have to love others because God is the one who gave us love
Like me, Marie, I love all people

Joyce
I don’t know but everybody seems to know it

Chorus Girls
Oh love, oh love, oh love, oh love

Misisnzo
You may know all the languages in the world But without love your speech is senseless You may have inspired preaching and teaching You may have all the knowledge and understanding But without love you are nothing I can give you everything I have Even my body to be burned but without love that does me no good So let’s love one another For God is love

Work Together

This song was entirely written and composed by girls residing at Vision of Hope, a shelter for vulnerable girls. The girls also helped direct the music video. Zex wrote the chorus. Mwamba, Marie and Lizzy wrote the verses and the other girls at the center sang in the chorus and featured in the video. Zex and some of the other girls living at Vision of Hope are now involved in street outreach programs, where they try to encourage the children that still reside on the streets to live in the centers around Lusaka that exist for them, or to assist them in family reintegration and counseling sessions.

The girls felt it was important to film part of this video in the streets where a lot of the street children are found, to expose the two parallel lives a lot of them have experienced. The other part of this video was filmed where these girls currently live, at Vision of Hope. This was an emotional video to film, but it was also a truly profound experience. The lyrics, “Today it’s me, tomorrow it’s you,” are powerful because they portray a deep sense of empathy and compassion, as if to say: “I feel you, I understand you and I am not separate from you. We are one and I wish only love for you.” There is no judgement for those suffering, there is only compassion, deep understanding, and love.

☼ ☼ ☼ Shoutout to all the people involved in the making of this song and video: Chico from Echo Studio Records for producing this song, Pule and Vince for directing, producing and editing the video, Negus-I Samy for being involved in our creative expressive therapy workshops to help create this song, Moses for his help facilitating while filming on the streets, Chitalu, Soneini and Marvis, and all the other passionate, dedicated staff at Vision of Hope for your partnership and for letting us use your crafts room day in and day out for recording purposes!! (ahem, especially Soneini!!!) And thanks most importantly to our girls at Vision of Hope, for your continuous inspiration, passion, drive and resilience. You have brought so much light into our lives and the magic you are creating is why we continue to exist! We give thanks!

Below are the lyrics translated into English:

Zex
You say Zambia is a Christian nation The children in the street are suffering
They don’t have anyone to take good care of them
They need food, shelter, education and good life
Let’s work together So that we can help orphans, widows, and vulnerable people
Chorus
Today it’s me
Tomorrow its you
So many children around in the streets
Instead of food, instead of shelter
Let’s work together and save the poor child
Let’s work together and save the poor child

Mwamba
Today it’s me
Tomorrow it’s you
The world is changing
Right through our eyes I know it’s bad Io know it’s sad
But with God’s help I know we can overcome
Every minute we spend is like a blessing that God puts upon us
You may think I’m wrong But my point is right
And the title is saving the poor child

Liz
Let’s work together and save the poor child
We want to have fortune so that we don’t have troubles
Let us be one in this world
And help us, the less privileged
The children in the streets don’t have food

Marie
Tomorrow it’s you
Today it’s me
I got a voice to raise my point
We are free to express the way we feel
Because our voice is strong
Our minds are set on what we want
When a voice is heard I know it’s strong

Chorus

Martine
I’m just a child reaching for a hand
I’m just a child reaching for a hand
I’m just a child reaching for a hand

Mapalo
I am that voice calling in our minds
I am that voice calling in our minds
I am that voice calling in our minds

Chorus

Let’s work together
Let’s work together
Let’s work together
Let’s work together
And save the poor child

Nkhani Zanga

My story is important
My voice is important
And I am important to you all
My voice is important
My story is important
And I am important to you all

Chorus

I write for people to hear my story
I sing for people to listen to my story
I write for people to hear my story

Lizzy

Sometimes it is very hard to understand one’s situation
My story is important and your story is also important
We may pass through many situations
But if we work together and express how we feel in our hearts
Let’s feel as one
Every person’s story is important to everyone

Mwamba

We got a lot of people pointing fingers on our lives
We got a lot of people who are trying to put us down
And a lot of people who are trying to shame us off

But we know we are strong
We know we are tough
If the night is dark
The day is bright

Chorus

Celebrate

Mufrika Edwards
Most of the times I get troubled if I see children in the streets
Begging like they do not have their parents
You better do something
You better give them hope
Hope to believe
Hope to see the future
Hope to believe

Chorus

We got to celebrate, we got to celebrate
Celebrate, celebrate, celebrate our lives
We got a vision, we got a vision
That we hope, that we hope
To see the future

Mwamba
Tomorrow is my day
I can shine
I got the light
It’s in my hands
The world is mine
When all is fine cause I am divine

Now, listen
The people will find me
But they won’t define me
I know what I’ve been through
I know where I stand
I’ve struggled to find it
I’ve struggled to earn it
Despite this and that
I’m still standing here
Wait, I got dreams non-stop
And I’m never gonna quit
Dreams non-stop
And I’m never gonna quit

Chorus
